The photos of the damage to the Trollenhagen church building Trollenhagen News by Editor Dave Nehrenz Greetings from the Nehrenz Network! It has been awhile since a newsletter has gone out to you. This is due to a Holy Land Trip I took this year. After returning from Israel, I had hours of video to edit, 100s of pictures and slides to collate and a presentation sheet to produce. My congregation, Trinity Lutheran Church in Norman, OK. sent me to the Holy Land as a "present" for my 10 years of serving them as their pastor. Kathy and the kids were not able to go. Now the sites, cities, geography and locations mentioned in the Bible are very real! (On this "personal pilgrimage" here I am at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem)
However, now the time has come then to get caught up on Nehrenz research. Most of you know from past issues that our ancestor Johann Christian Theodore Nehrenz came in October 1869 to New York City. He and his wife Marie Lemke were about 50 years old. They came from the little town of Trollenhagen, north of Neubrandenburg Germany. His father was named Christian Matthias Nerenz and his grandfather was named Daniel Nierentz. In the marriage records for Christian Matthias Nehrenz and Maria Scharff, it indicates that Christian’s father Daniel Nierentz (born about 1760?) was from the little town of Grischow, north of Trollenhagen. Chuck and Ruby Wolcott saw and took video of the churches in both Trollenhagen and Grischow. In order for us to go back further than the 1760s in our Nehrenz line, we must try to find records about Nehrenzs in Grischow. Otherwise we are at a dead-end. The letter and response on pages 2 and 3 are an attempt to do that. I thought you might find it interesting to see the kinds of "nuts and bolts" research that goes into any genealogy work. It is "detective" work plain and simple! Also, in this issue, in "The Nehrenz Roster", I have added another "field". I have sorted all the names by the Nehrenz family member from which they descend. To jog your memory, all of us descend from one of Johann and Mary Nehrenz’ children: Frederick, Christian, Carl, Jane, Caroline, William or Henry. (Frederick and his wife, and his brother Carl came over in 1871) You will be able to see in one glance which "branch" of the Nehrenz line all the others descend from! Also, we are still in need of many Nehrenz relations full names, places of residence, birth dates, wedding dates, children’s names, dates of death etc….PLEASE send us this! Thanks! Dave Nehrenz This is Pastor Gunther Schulz at the front door of the Church in Trollenhagen (where all our Nehrenz ancestors entered to attend the Divine Service)
Note: I wrote this letter a year ago to Pastor Schulz who serves the Lutheran congregation in Trollenhagen. He answered my questions as best as he could. He also gave me a contact pastor in Grischow, north of Trollenhagen. This is where we believe Daniel Nierentz was from prior to coming to Trollenhagen. 1 September, 1998 Dear Pastor Schulz, Greetings from Oklahoma U.S.A.! "Please excuse my poor German translation in this letter. ( I have sent both an English and a German copy of this same letter to you) Chuck and Ruby Wolcott have sent to me some photos and a video of their meeting with you at the Trollenhagen church. I really have enjoyed these. Thank you very much for spending time with them. You were very kind to give them a tour of the church in Trollenhagen. It was a special event for them to hear you play the organ and conduct a divine service for them. Bless you in our Lord for your thoughtfulness and Christian hospitality!Thank you for the Neubrandenberg newspaper clippings and the picture of the repair of the church roof in Trollenhagen. I have read them. May I ask some questions?: 1. Where are all the people buried who died before 1945? Ruby said that all the gravestones in the Trollenhagen church cemetery were from 1945 and later. Where are all the people buried who died from 1780 until 1945? 2. Does the church in Trollenhagen have a name? (For example: Saint John's Lutheran Church?) 3. Is there a written history of Trollenhagen? May I obtain a copy? 4. Are there old maps of Trollenhagen which show locations of the old houses before the airport and the new houses were built? Are there old photographs of Trollenhagen from 1870 to 1900? 5. Is it possible for me to research old legal and property records to discover where our Nehrenz ancestors lived in Trollenhagen? 6. Who were the aristocrats who lived in the Trollenhagen manor house? Were they the Siemmerling family? Who owns it now and will they repair it? 7. Our surname "Nehrenz" was formerly "Nerenz" which was formerly "Nierentz". There are still over 50 families in Germany with the "Nerenz" name. I have contacted them. We have traced back to "Daniel Nierentz" (our oldest ancestor) who came from Grischow in Pommern. He was possibly born around 1760. Who may I write in Grischow to research records concerning this Daniel Nierentz? Finally, if there are any expenses involved in answering my questions, please inform me so we may pay you for your research. I know that you are a retired pastor and not a paid genealogist! In our next "Nehrenz Family Newsletter", we are going to feature information you gave to the Wolcotts. We have 125 families who receive this, and they will all gain much from what you shared with the Wolcotts. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you always! Amen!" Sincerely in our Lord, Pastor David Nehrenz 902 Carey Dr. Norman, OK. USA 2 June , 1999 Dear Brother Nehrenz "Thank you repeatedly for your letter from Sept- 98. Now short answers to your questions. To 1.) Each graveside has a "burial- term" of 25 to 30 years. After that it is "dissolved" and occupied anew. Gravestones (Memorial) are removed and scrapped. (Provided that they don’t have art-value). To 2.) A name (dedication-title) for the church in TROLLENHAGEN is not known. To 3- & 4-) I don't have a chronicle, likewise old maps- (Through the wars a lot was lost!) To 5.-) ???? To 6.-) The manor house belonged until 1945 to the family GRISEBACH. It is dilapidated and is in part being restored by Mr. Reinhard Grisebach~ who has bought it back. He is still putting it in order, for he has no means. He lives near HAMBURG and comes frequently to TROLLENHAGEN.) To 7-.) GRISCHOW is only 5 km from here off. But it is situated in Pomerania. You can write to- Pastor R Hans-Joachim Beier 17089 SIEDENBOLLENTIN (there are old parochial registers existing) Yesterday (l. June) was at important CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE in TROLLENHAGEN. The church must urgently be repaired (Roof, gable, foundation-cracks, etc.) Expenses this year about; $45,000 Next year about; $150,000 We went from house to house to collect. Result: $10,000 (including larger contributions) Maybe the"NEHRENZ CLAN" helps us too? We have only $ 10,000 to date.Perhaps you get together- (THE NEHRENZ CLAN) $1,000?" God bless you all together Yours, Pastor Gunther Schulz Hauptstr. 13 17039 Neddemin Germany P.S. Pastor Schulz is a kindly retired pastor who showed great kindness to Chuck and Ruby Wolcott when they went and visited Trollenhagen.
