THE NEHRENZ NETWORK NEWSLETTER- AUGUST 1995
VOL.1 NO. 2

GREETINGS FOR A SECOND TIME ALL NEHRENZ RELATIVES AND FRIENDS!
By now, most of you received the first TNN Newsletter which was composed in May 1995. This
second effort comes after many more contacts have been made and more information has come to light. To begin, several different names are shared by our readers. These include: NEHRENZ, NEHRENS, NERENZ, NERENS, NEHREN.

At this point, we still do not know for sure if these are totally different names or variants on the same name.

I have appreciated hearing from many of you these past months. You have sent pictures, copies of certificates, family tree information and the like.

Many of you have not yet responded or may still be wondering what this is all about! I can assure you that this is on the "up and up" and is essentially an attempt to network fellow descendants of common
ancestors.

Names, addresses and phone numbers have been accessed through CD ROM national phone directories. We still do not have all possible Nehrenz names, but we have a good start.

Let me begin by saying this, if you who read this have a different spelling than "NEHRENZ" in your family name, do not toss this newsletter aside. Please do not assume that what we are discovering does not apply to you. I believe the variant spellings DO tie into some common ancestor somewhere.

The other thing I would ask is that you take an interest in this endeavor, even if right now your genealogy holds no particular interest for you. I realize that life is filled with: making a living,
school-work, going to church, fishing, hiking, hobbies, music, soccer/baseball practices and games, watching TV and using your computer. (And whatever your family is busy doing.)

But at some point, someone in your family is going to say, "Mom, I have this project at school, I'm supposed to trace our family tree, how do I do this?" That's how I became interested in this field myself back in Lakewood, Ohio in 1972 while I was in high school.

What I am going to ask in this newsletter several times is this: SEND  PHOTOCOPIES OF PICTURES-PLEASE. Find all those old pictures in boxes, take them to a copy place, copy them, mark on the back who is on the picture, and send them in. We will have a clearing house here where anyone may have access to them. This way we can compile a better
FAMILY HISTORY. You may have in your possession the only copy of a record or photo of an ancestor common to us all. Many have already sent such items and we thank you!

Since the last newsletter, I have been interviewing on tape various folks with Nehrenz ties. I met in Rocky River, Ohio with Leonard and Margarite Nehrenz, Claire Talbert, Elva Brobst and Mildred Youngblood this summer in June. Their memories and recollections are invaluable in these efforts and I enjoyed meeting all of them.

I have also interviewed immediate Nehrenz relatives: my father Clyde Nehrenz, Uncle Harold Nehrenz and Aunt Marjorie Hoffmeyer. Several other interviews are planned. This is another favor I could ask, to audio tape yourself and your older relatives discussing their memories of Nehrenz grandparents and relatives. This is a lot of fun for everyone involved!

This summer, we went back to Cleveland for a visit and my brother John Nehrenz' wedding. While I was there I took pictures of all the NEHRENZ TOMBSTONES AND BURIAL PLACES. I also drove all around the streets in Cleveland where the Nehrenzs originally settled, around W. 25th St., and around Scranton Rd., where Immanuel Lutheran Church is located. Our original forefather: JOHANN CHRISTIAN THEODOR NEHRENZ and his wife MARIE LEMPKE with their children belonged to this church. As the family grew up and moved away, they raised their own children in other churches and communities.

If you recall the last newsletter, and I hope you kept it on file, I sent a map showing TROLLENHAGEN from where these Nehrenzs emigrated. I also sent a picture of the ship BORUSSIA on which they sailed from Hamburg to New York. Included also was an initial NEHRENZ ROSTER. This newsletter includes other pictures, maps and an updated Nehrenz roster.

What will probably be of most interest to all of you will be a giant FAMILY TREE from which you can find your place in the Nehrenz line. This will be coming in the future, and will need to be put on a special software program created for this purpose. It will be very large and will have to be a fold-out.

THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST!
EDITOR AND RELATIVE! - DAVE NEHRENZ.

I will try to update you on the research and ongoing inquiry into the Nehrenzs in Germany from our past as well as ones still living there.

Three routes are being pursued:

1. The parish church at TROLLENHAGEN IN MECKLENBURG-STRELITZ has been written a letter in German, asking if additional information is available on the NEHRENZ LINE. We will wait to see if there is any response.

(The photocopied parish church records are still available to us at the LDS center here in Norman, and are still being researched.)

2. The daily newspaper in NEUBRANDENBURG is being sent an ad to run in their paper, asking anyone with Nehrenz connections to write us here in the USA. (Neubrandenburg is just south of Trollenhagen and is a larger city.)

3. I obtained from the LDS church CD-ROM German phone directory, a list of 37 German families named "NERENZ". A search for the name "NEHRENZ" found no one with that name presently living in Germany. I have written a letter and mailed it to all these 37 families, introducing myself, our NEHRENZ NETWORK, and asking them to please correspond with us.

The information on the Nehrenz line was included, and the request was made to reply and explain a possible connection between the two names. Also, if the names are different, they were asked if they have information on the NEHRENZ line. We have received 3 responses already -Harry, Kay and Peter NERENZ- all from different parts of Germany!

A main source for research guidance has been the LDS GERMANY RESEARCH OUTLINE. This booklet directs one to the library of resources in Salt Lake City from which we may gain access to information about other sources in Germany which include:

DIRECTORIES, FAMILY HISTORY BOOKS, CIVIL REGISTRATION RECORDS, PROBATE RECORDS, POPULATION CENSUS and the like.

There are also GENEALOGICAL SOCIETIES one can join, in which one can publish notification of looking for relatives from your family line. If any of you are able to read and write German, please let us know!

You will notice how much larger the NEHRENZ ROSTER has become. Largely through the efforts of Ruby Wolcott and Kathleen Nehrenz, we have accessed the national USA CD-ROM phone directory for names, addresses and phone numbers. They have dutifully sent any updates to me. I WANT TO THANK THEM FOR ALL OF US!!

Many others of you have sent names and addresses, and I ask you continue to send updates and corrections.

You will note that the roster also includes: NEHRENZ, NEHRENS, NERENZ, NERENS AND NEHREN since we have collected various surname addresses.

TO REVIEW THE MAIN NEHRENZ LINE WE ARE CONNECTED TO, PLEASE RECALL THESE DETAILS:

JOHANN CHRISTIAN THEODOR NEHRENZ  "Christian" (b.3 Mar 1820; d.23 Jun 1888) married on 17 Oct 1843 to: JOHANNA MARIA ELIZABETH LEMPKE   "Mary" (b.28 Nov 1818; d.7 Feb 1889). Together they left Trollenhagen in 1869 and came to the USA with these children:

1.FRIEDRICK CHRISTIAN MARTIN NEHRENZ  "Frederick" (b.5 May 1844; d.28 Aug 1906) (he came over later after his parents and was already married when he did)

This is a picture of his family (he married Frederica Lorenz over in Trollenhagen!):

(Frank Martin
(a friend), Frederick Nehrenz, William Nehrenz (son), Frederica Nehrenz, August Nehrenz (kneeling- son)

2.JOHANN CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICK NEHRENZ   "Christian" (b.7 Apr 1846; d.14 Oct 1916)

3.JOHANN CARL FRIEDRICK THEODOR "Carl" NEHRENZ (b.27 Sep 1848; d. ?)

4.CAROLINE WILHELMINE FRIEDRIKE NEHRENZ  "Wilhelimine- Minnie" (b.25 Nov. 1850; d. ?)

5.CARL LUDWIG WILHELM NEHRENZ  "William" (b.27 Dec. 1853; d.8 Dec.1928)

This is a picture of William Nehrenz and his first wife Christine Beth:

6.JOHANNA FRIEDRIKA CAROLINE NEHRENZ  "Jane" (b. 26 Jun 1855; d.?)

7. HEINRICH CHRISTIAN THEODOR NEHRENZ  "Henry" (b.12 Aug 1861; d. 6 Nov 1906)

This is a picture of Henry Nehrenz when he married Mary Rupprecht:
---------------------------------------
Most all of the NEHRENZ people in the USA descend from FRIEDRICK, WILHELM, AND HENRY. WHICH ONE ARE YOU FROM? More research needs to be done concerning the descendants of CHRISTIAN, CAROLINA AND JOHANNA.

Questions which remain: Did they go via Ellis Island?
Where did they go when they first arrived?
(before Cleveland)

1. As I mentioned earlier the main way you can help PHOTOCOPY and MARK ON THE BACK ANY
PHOTOS (ADD DATES TOO) YOU HAVE IN OLD BOXES- MAIL THEM TO US AT THE ADDRESS ON THIS NEWSLETTER (JUST USE LOCAL COPIER)

2. Why is this so important? We have very few photos of these ancestors. I have seen photos of Friedrick, William and Henry, but I have never seen any photos of the sisters Caroline and Johanna nor of Christian. And most unfortunately, no photos of the patriarch JOHANN CHRISTIAN AND HIS WIFE MARIA. (The photocopies aren't the best but please make them anyway)

MANY OF YOU HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO FILL OUT THE FORM BELOW AND SENT IT TO US, BUT MANY OF YOU HAVE NOT. WOULD YOU PLEASE DO THIS AND ALSO SEND PICTURES? WHY?

1. FOR POSTERITY'S SAKE - This whole enterprise will be a whole lot more interesting to everyone if we can tell a little about ourselves. Spouse? Occupation? Hobbies? Children and grandchildren? Places in which you have lived? Countries you have traveled to?

2. NAMES WITH A FACE - So many of you have indicated that you like to see pictures of fellow Nehrenzs to see if there is any resemblance in appearance to your own family. That is why I would ALSO ask that you NOT ONLY SEND PICTURES OF OUR LONG AGO DECEASED ANCESTORS, BUT ALSO PICTURES OF US PRESENT NEHRENZS ALIVE TODAY! We do not want to turn THE NEHRENZ NETWORK into a mere dead person's society!

3. A NEHRENZ HISTORY BOOK and prior to that, a PICTORAL DIRECTORY - If we get everyone's response in sending family pictures, it would be great to have (like most churches do) a NEHRENZ PICTORIAL DIRECTORY. The congregation I pastor, Trinity Lutheran Church, puts one of these out every few years. To whet your appetite, this newsletter contains a smattering of photos we have already acquired. WE NEED YOURS ALSO! SOME HAVE ASKED IF THEY COULD HELP WITH POSTAGE COSTS FOR THIS ENTERPRISE-YES, THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED! IF YOU WANT TO HELP, JUST MAIL IT TO THE TNN ADDRESS.
